The Petron Blaze Boosters have formally acquired the rights to Wynne Arboleda. According to PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial, league commissioner Chito Salud has already signed a letter informing other teams that Petron now owns the rights of the free agent point guard, who was released by Barako Bull last week.
But Arboleda would not have a chance to suit up for the Boosters, who are working on a trade to send him to the Air 21 Express in exchange for Jojo Duncil.
Air 21 tean manager Jovie Saddul told InterAKTV that the team has tendered an offer to Petron.
“It’s a straight deal,” said Saddul in a telephone interview. “We’ve offered Duncil for them because they’ve been seeking him as early as several months ago.”
Duncil was a member of the Boosters squad that won last season’s Governors’ Cup. The former University of Santo Tomas hotshot moved to Air 21 this season after his rights reverted back to the old Barako Bull franchise at the start of the season.
Saddul said the ball is now in Petron’s court. “We’re now waiting for their counteroffer. I hope we can make a deal in due time,” he said.
Air 21 coach Franz Pumaren earlier talked about the importance of having Arboleda on the team, citing the need for a veteran point guard on the squad.
Arboleda, on the other hand, was elated to learn that he’s likely to end up being a part of the Express anew. He is no stranger to the Air 21 uniform, as the Barako Bull franchise previously carried the brand name prior to this season.
Bert Lina, who owns both Barako Bull and Air 21, is also Arboleda’s father-in-law.
“Mas OK if doon ako mapupunta,” said Arboleda. “Sinabihan na ako na mag-ensayo sa Air21 pero hidni pa yata sila tapos mag-usap ng Petron.”
