THREE Filipino teachers were among the 19 people confirmed killed in a shopping mall fire in Doha, Qatar, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.
The Department of Education has extended its condolences to the teachers’ families.
The fire erupted at the Gympanzee Nursery School inside the Venice-themed Villaggio Mall in the Qatari capital on Monday.
The three teachers—Maricel Orosco, Margie Yecyec and Julie Ann Soco—all worked at the school and died of smoke inhalation, Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez told Agence France-Presse.
A brother of one of the teachers was also treated in a hospital for smoke inhalation but had been pronounced out of danger, Hernandez said. He added that this information came from Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Cresencio Relacion.
Four children from Spain, a set of two-year-old triplets from New Zealand and a three-year-old French child were among those who perished in the blaze, according to their respective governments.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro expressed sadness over the tragedy.
“We wish to extend our condolences to the families of [the teachers] and other victims of this unfortunate incident,” Luistro said in a text message.
”The loss of the life of a Filipino, no matter where they may be, affects us all,” he added.
