NEWS FEED: Roach on Tim: A body-builder, no power hitter - 5 JUNE 2012

By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star)

LOS ANGELES – On paper, Timothy Bradley looks tough, undefeated in 28 fights. In person, he looks even tougher, all ripped and full of muscles.

Freddie Roach is not impressed -- never been, never will.

“He looks great for a bodybuilding contest,” said Pacquiao’s chief trainer, referring to the 28-year-old Californian who follows a strict vegetarian diet when he trains for a fight.

“But for a boxer? I mean how long can he carry that (body) most of the round,” said the celebrated trainer.

Bradley goes for black bean burgers, and he puts in nothing but vegetables into his system, with full abstention from meat, fish and dairy products.

He really looks great.

“But how hard can he throw a punch?” added Roach, who must have spent long hours watching tapes of old Bradley fights that he can see deeper than those muscles.

“How slow is he (for the fight)?  He’ll be slow-mo,” said Roach who happens to train the fastest boxer in the planet.

“With all that muscle he’s going to be slow. He has all the muscle. (But) No protection,” Roach was shown in HBO’s 24/7 telling Pacquiao in a recent session.

The five-time Trainer of the Year isn’t buying the thought that all those muscles could carry Bradley past Pacquiao, who probably hits like no other.

Bradley has never faced an elite boxer like Pacquiao, one who throws punches from all angles, with great speed, and normally lands them – hard.

In return, does Bradley have something to throw against Pacquiao?

Roach doesn’t think so.

“Nope. He’s never been a puncher he never will be,” he said.

“Punchers are born, not made,” Roach added.
