MANILA, Philippines - The country's next Supreme Court chief justice will come from a list of names that the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) will submit to President Benigno Aquino, a Palace official said Tuesday.
Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte issued the statement after the Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, voted to remove Renato Corona as Supreme Court chief justice.
The Senate, in a 20-3 vote, found Corona guilty with respect to Article 2 of the impeachment complaint for failing to accurately declare his peso and dollar assets in his annual statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth, as required by the Constitution and the law.
The Palace welcomed the Senate's decision, with Aquino watching the proceedings on television.
"Our democratic institutions have been strengthened and have been proven to work," Valte said.
She added that the Senate ruling "is a step forward in terms of restoring public confidence in our courts, and trust in the members of the judiciary."
"Mr. Corona is merely the public face of the things that ail our justice system. Let us never forget that those who come to court, be they rich or poor, must do so in the expectation of receiving impartial justice from those who uphold both the spirit and the letter of the law," she added. - report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
