NEWS FEED: Gays can become cops - PNP - 20 May 2012

(The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) is open to the idea of recruiting gays into the police force.

Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., chief of the Police Community Relations Group (PCRG), said the PNP does not discriminate against anyone wanting to join the police service.

Cruz said the PNP is willing to follow whatever changes that the law will allow.

“As long as there is a law passed by Congress, then we will abide by it,” he said.

The possibility of hiring gay policemen came after Sen. Gregorio Honasan proposed to scrap the height requirement for police applicants.

Cruz said the PNP is willing to accept Honasan’s proposal, saying the capability of an individual is not measured by his or her height.

Under the present rules, the PNP height limit for male police applicant is at least 1.62 meters (5’3”) tall while female police applicant must be at least 1.57 meters (5’1”) tall.

“We (in the PNP) do not discriminate any group nor any gender as long as they follow the rules laid out, we will accept them,” Cruz said.

He, however, clarified that cross dresser gays are definitely not allowed in the PNP. With Cecille Suerte Felipe
