Rain or Shine seeks its third straight win when they collide with Air 21 in the opener of the PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Elasto Painters and the Express face off at 5:15 p.m. with Petron Blaze also seeking a third win in a row against Talk ‘N Text at 7:30 p.m.

Rain or Shine and Petron are tied for the top spot with identical 2-0 win-loss records.

“The key to contending is try to win as many games as you can very early in the conference because this is a short tournament,” said Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao.

Rain or Shine is coming off a 100-94 win over B-MEG with import Jamelle Cornley again providing stability for his squad.

“I think Cornley is the right fit for us. He has the right balance. He needs to score but he also needs to let our locals score and he understands that,” Guiao added.

They will be facing a motivated Air 21 quintet, which is coming off a shocking 97-86 win over the Tropang Texters.

Zach Graham had 38 points and 15 rebounds in the Express’ first win.

“Our import has an all-around game. He opens up shots for the locals,” said Air 21 mentor Franz Pumaren. “I talked to our locals that we are fortunate to get our import but at the end of the day, it’s still the locals who will help us win games.”

In the main tiff, defending champion Petron seeks a 3-0 start against the struggling Talk ‘N Text five, which remains winless after two starts.

“Talk ‘N Text remains a strong team despite being depleted. We cannot underestimate them. We need to play as a team and work as a team,” said Boosters coach Ato Agustin.
