NEWS FEED: Donaire hopes to unify titles in Mathebula fight - 24 May 2012



World super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. will fight South African Jeffrey Mathebula in a title unification match on July 7 at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles.

The 29-year-old Donaire (28-1, 18 by knockouts) will headline the HBO-televised double-header featuring unbeaten former world lightweight champion Brandon Rios, Donaire’s stable mate at the Oxnard Boxing Academy owned by the two boxers’ trainer, Robert Garcia.

Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum, Donaire’s promoter, said by phone that the

Pinoy’s fight against he International Boxing Federation super bantam titlist is in line with Donaire’s desire to unify the title belts in his division.

Arum said Donaire is the type of boxer who wants to fight the best, adding that unifying titles is the best way to do that.

Mathebula (26-3-2, 14 KOs) will be Donaire’s second fight this year since winning the vacant WBO belt against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Puerto Rico on Feb. 4 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

In the boxing card’s co-feature, the power-punching Rios Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KOs) will face Mauricio Herrera (18-2, 7 KOs) in a junior welterweight contest.

The five-feet-10 Mathebula enjoys about a three-inch height advantage against Donaire, who hurt his right hand during his showdown with Vazquez.

Arum said he expects a good crowd for the July 7 fight card because Rios draw big crowds form the Hispanic population plus the fact that Donaire has a strong following among ethnic Filipinos.

Donaire—a Filipino American boxer from San Leandro, California—hopes have fights this year, including another title unification fight in Manila.
