NEWS FEED: Corona docs rule out heart attack - 25 May 2012

by David Dizon, ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines – Doctors at The Medical City on Thursday said Chief Justice Renato Corona has not suffered a heart attack but warned that the risk of an acute coronary event is still likely if he is exposed to stress.

“An acute myocardial infarction has been ruled out. His blood sugar and kidney function are stable,” Dr. Eugenio Jose Ramos, senior vice president of Medical Services Group of The Medical City hospital in Pasig City, said in a press conference.

Ramos said Corona will be transferred to a regular room after his biochemical markers turned out normal.

However, he said Corona's doctors have reservations about his plan to attend the impeachment hearing in the Senate tomorrow.

“It is the consensus of the medical team that attending the Senate hearing tomorrow still poses a risk to the CJ’s cardiac status. Purely on the basis of his medical condition. Therefore, the team has reservations about exposing him to the risk of an acute coronary event tomorrow,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said the Medical City team will be with the chief magistrate as part of its response to ensure continuity of care and patient safety.

Corona bizarrely left the witness stand and checked himself into hospital on Tuesday after a three-hour testimony in which he denounced the landmark corruption proceedings as a personal vendetta by President Benigno Aquino.

His spokesman Midas Marquez later said during radio interviews that he had suffered a possible heart attack after the court hearing, during which Corona rejected a charge that he failed to declare $12 million in bank accounts.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile had ordered Corona to appear in court by Friday, so the tribunal can rule by early next week whether to kick him out of office. -- With Agence France-Presse
