NEWS FEED: CJ Corona returns to the Senate for impeachment trial - 25 May 2012

BY KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMA NEWS

Chief Justice Renato Corona on Friday returned to the Senate, three days after his apparent walkout from the impeachment court and eventual confinement in a hospital.

Corona arrived at the Senate at 1:17 p.m. on board a blue ambulance from The Medical City. He was accompanied by his wife Cristina and children Francis and Carla.

The Senate sergeant-at-arms said Corona will be brought to a special holding room in the Senate where he will stay before the trial begins at 2:00 p.m.

Corona did not use a wheelchair offered to him upon arrival and instead, walked slowly to the Senate hall while holding on to his wife's shoulder. A diabetic who was admitted to the intensive care unit two nights ago for a heart ailment, Corona did not appear to be very weak when he arrived at the Senate.

On Tuesday, Corona was brought to The Medical City at past 7:00 p.m. after appearing before the Senate impeachment court and delivering a lengthy statement.

In his three-hour opening statement, Corona belied the allegations made against him in the impeachment court and in the media.

At the end of his statement, he abruptly rose from the witness stand and walked out of the Senate session hall without the court's permission. His lawyers later on said he was feeling sick.

The senators gave the chief justice until Friday to return to the witness stand, after which they will consider the case submitted.

Doctors attending to Corona earlier said he could attend the Senate impeachment court on Friday if he wishes to, but warned him of the possible health "risk" that may come with it.

On Thursday, Corona signed a hospital waiver, clearing his doctors of any responsibility if he falls ill after appearing in court. – with Mark MerueƱas, KG/VVP, GMA News
