NEWS FEED: Basa siblings label Corona’s testimony ‘untrue, unkind’ - 23 May 2012

ANDREO C. CALONZO, GMA NEWS

Cousins-in-law of Chief Justice Renato Corona on Tuesday described as “untrue” and “unkind” the chief magistrate’s testimony that their deceased father, Jose Maria Basa III, started the feud within their family.

Carmen Basa, one of Corona’s cousins-in-law, was in tears when she said the statement of the chief justice during the impeachment trial “showed his true character.”

“I just wanted to say that we are very saddened about the development. The name of our good father is being dragged into this proceeding. He is not here to defend himself,” Basa said in a press conference after the Tuesday’s impeachment trial.

“What he [Corona] said was untrue and unkind… As a chief justice, he should have known better,” she added.

Basa, along with sisters Ana, Isabel and Francesca, flew all the way from the United States on Monday to watch Corona testify.

During his testimony, Corona said Basa III sparked a long-standing family feud after his deceased in-law allegedly transferred a property in Libis, Quezon City under his name.

Basa III is the brother of Asuncion Basa-Roco, the mother of Corona’s wife, Cristina. See full Basa family tree here.

The chief justice described his wife’s deceased uncle as a “spoiled brat” who never had to work for a living.

Carmen Basa, however, said that she is not keen on sitting as a witness to answer Corona’s testimony during the rebuttal stage of the trial.

“At this point, we are not gonna go down to his level,” she said.

In his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth, Corona had declared a loan of P11 million from his wife’s family firm, the Basa-Guidote Enterprise Inc. (BGEI).

Former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza had testified that the city bought a parcel of land from BGEI for P34 million. The defense said this amount was later transferred to Corona’s bank account. —VS, GMA News
