PAGASA: Tropical Storm Nina intensifies; LPA hovers near Catanduanes
Tropical Storm Nina (Prapiroon) intensified as it moved closer to Cagayan province in Northern Luzon Monday afternoon, state weather forecasters said.
PAGASA also said a low-pressure area that may bring rain was hovering some 100 km northeast of Catanduanes province in Bicol as of 4 p.m. Monday.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Tropical Storm Nina was estimated at 1,210 km east of Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph.
Nina was forecast to move west at 9 kph, it added.
"Cagayan Valley region and the provinces of Aurora and Quezon will be cloudy with frequent light to moderate rain or thunderstorms. Metro Manila and the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera, Bicol and the rest of Calabarzon and Central Luzon will have occasional light to moderate rain or thunderstorms," PAGASA said.
The rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief rain showers or thunderstorms.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the north to northwest will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.
Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northwest to west, with slight to moderate seas.
Earlier, PAGASA said Tropical Storm Nina may stay in the Philippine Area of Responsibility until Sunday, though it might make a U-turn and head toward Japan Thursday or Friday.
